57 Great Math Stories and the Problems They Present

Authors: Debbie Haver, Alice Koziol, Elain Haven, Dan Mulligan, Adam Rodriguez, and Warner McGee
Average review score:

Real World Math for Kids!
I purchased this book for my 10 year old to work on during summer vacation. Delaware is deep into education standards, writing and problem solving. This book touches it all! The "word problems" are great short stories and deal with topics children are familiar with. The questions after each story challenge children in reading comprehension as well as math skills. I would recommend this book for teachers as well as parents for enrichment purposes.

Africa and Children
Published in Paperback by Carlton Press (March, 1993)
Author: J. Ninsel Warner
Average review score:

Growing Up in Liberia
Ninsel Warner is a man who has lived several lifetimes, it seems, from his youth growing up in a small tribal village in Liberia, to a post in the Liberian government, to working in the General Mills travel agency in Minneapolis, and now as a franchise owner in ServiceMaster in the Twin Cities.

Ninsel wrote this book after he took a writing course while still living in Liberia. The book chronicles what it is like to grow up in a village where the witch doctor can actually cast spells on people, causing them to die without seeming cause. When Charles Taylor began his revolution against the government in which Ninsel was serving, Warner faced a foe even more devastating than the witch doctor. He was captured by the rebels, who agreed not to take his life only after he asked them if they had sons they would not like to see killed. He said his mother would be very troubled if they took his life, and they relented and released him. Shortly thereafter, he fled the country and moved to the United States.

His children still live in Africa, continually in flight from the forces of war and devastation that pursue them wherever they go. If you want to obtain an understanding of what it is like to grow up in rural Africa, this book should be a "must" reading.

I understand that Ninsel is working on a sequel to the book. When (and if) it is released, I strongly recommend that you buy a copy and read it. You will be treated to a highly authentic piece of folk literature from a culture that is different from any you have ever known--unless, of course, you grew up in a small tribe in Liberia.

Alan Warner's Morvern Callar: A Reader's Guide (Continuum Contemporaries)
Published in Paperback by Continuum Pub Group (June, 2002)
Author: Sophy Dale
Average review score:

Totally worth reading
This is worth reading just for the extended interview with Alan Warner alone - one of the most interesting and revealing discussions with a novelist I've read in ages. He's incredibly forthright about his own thoughts on the novel, like this: 'I see her boyfriend as a sort of existential figure, who was well travelled. Although he came from the middle classes, I don't think he was bourgeois. He was leading something of a double life - she didn't know how much money he had and so on, I suppose it was a dishonest relationship in that sense, but I think it was happy nevertheless.' If you're into this novel at all, or the movie (which is AWESOME), then try to track down a copy of this book. Don't be put off by the ... phrase 'reader's guide' on the front cover, it's much much better than that.

All Our Yesterdays
Published in Hardcover by Advent Pub (June, 1970)
Author: Harry, Jr. Warner
Average review score:

SF fans of yesteryear
_All our Yesterdays_ by Harry Warner jr. tells the story of science fiction fandom (the enthusiast circles around the genre) of the 40ies. The story is one of very talented and passionate people, often quite young, who believed in the genre and technology and science, especially space exploration. It also chronicles their strivings to organise and express themselves, as well as som in-fighting. One thing that strikes me is how like itself fandom seems to be, although I live in another country than the US and my father was born in the 40ies, there are a lot of things here that I, as a modern science fiction fan, can relate to. _All our Yesterdays_ is also touching in places when it comes to the real world intruding on the world of fandom: young fans who join the armed and sometimes fall in combat. This book is illustrated with fascinating photographs. An obligatory read for fans interested in the history of fanzines and fandom.

Angkor: The Hidden Glories
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (November, 1990)
Authors: Michael Freeman, Roger Warner, and David Larkin
Average review score:

Impressive tour of Angkor
The most beautiful collection of color photographs of the Angkor Wat complex that I have seen. The accompanying narrative is thorough and places the images in an understandable perspective. Anyone planning to visit Angkor will want to review "Angkor: The Hidden Glories" first. Those who see this book will be pleased to find that the trip is easily made in comfort these days, unlike the days of the PRK era when Warner made this great photo survey.

The Arabian Link

WoW!
This book amazed me. The use of words were incrediable as well as its internal conflict. A great book for anyone interested in oil or Saudi Arabia. I recommend it for an adult considering its technical verbose wording and terms. I throughly enjoyed it and hope you try it out because it is by far 5 stars.
